FFXIV Write 2024 - Prompt #21 - Shade

Content Warnings: Dead background characters are mentioned, blood/wound mentioned, but not to excess.

Spoiler Warnings: Spoilers through the first half of Stormblood.

Summary: The sight of smoke on the horizon brings back an old memory, something best not remembered. That memory might also be her only path forward.

It had been a long time since she'd heard those words, heard the darker side of herself made manifest, and yet Aelita found she couldn't shake them.

Especially not here. Not now.

It had been a simple reconnaissance mission in preparation for a joint attack on Castellum Velodyna: her, the twins, and Pipin. Unfortunately, all they’d managed to scout were plumes of smoke on the horizon and the hot glow of fire emanating from what appeared to be the Reach. They'd all run back as quickly as they could, but the sinking feeling of being too late had begun gnawing away at Aelita's insides.

You won't make it. Not without me.

They’d encountered Krile and Arenvald on the road back, escorting a handful of injured soldiers who'd managed to escape the fighting.

There was a shared unspoken thought amongst the four of them: If this is what's left of the survivors, then what must it be like at the Reach?

You can't save them. You're not strong enough. But I am.

They wouldn't have to wait long to find out.

It was immediately apparent after crossing into what had been their base of operations that it had been a massacre. Imperial troops and Skulls everywhere, civilians taken hostage, and resistance fighters she'd spoken with only hours before lying dead in the sand.

I'm the only one who can fix this. The only one who can set this right!

Aelita tried to survey the rest of the scene as best she could through the smoke as they charged ahead. And that was when she saw it: Lyse, frozen in shock beneath the watchful eye of Fordola, the traitor they'd met before, and in front of her was… Oh no. Navigator, it can't be…

Y'shtola lay in the dirt, unconscious and oozing blood from a huge gash that stained her white coat a sickening shade of red.

For the first time since that fateful day in Whitebrim, a familiar shade appeared before Aelita.

When will be enough for you? When will you realize that this is what you get for playing pretend? For thinking you can be the hero, all on your own?

Aelita had no words, no answers for the shadowy reflection that stood before her.

Now, will you hand me the reins, as you once promised?

Aelita took a deep breath. Navigator, forgive me for what I do. She extended her hands to the shade, palms facing the sky, and her reflection quickly took them in her own. 

You've chosen wisely. I'll take care of this, don't you worry.

Aelita felt the power flow into her, an overwhelming wave of dark energy. She could feel some small part of her, the real her, being tossed about like a ship in a storm, searching for anything that might be a safe harbor. I'll find that calm again. This will not be the end. It's just what must be done, for now, she thought, trying to reassure herself that she hadn't unleashed a demon that she couldn't hope to contain. It was the last thought she had before the shade gained control.

Aelita lowered her head for a moment, drew her greatsword from her back, and charged forward into the fray, her eyes an unnatural, stormy red.

like tigerclaw and brokentail would be talking abt their plans to attack thunderclan and kill bluestar (in private of course~) when tigerclaw hears his kids calling out for him and immediately pauses the convo and leaves (brokentail being super annoyed abt this unprofessional behavior lmao)

as soon as they see tigerclaw, tawnykit and bramblekit would immediately run over to him and climb on him and tell him abt their day to him

“papa!! papa!! i had a dream that you could jump REALLY high and catch stars and i thought that was really cool!!”

and while the his kids were talking, he’s got this big smile on his face that everyone rarely sees and everyone nearby seeing this whole interaction are just not used to seeing tigerclaw being so gentle and easy-going like who’s this guy and where’s tigerclaw???

I've seen it said in places that Jon and Martin's relationship (specifically Jon realizing he has feelings for Martin) feels rushed and out of nowhere, and there's a perspective here that I want to share.

I think some people see them as explicitly a gay couple and expect them both to react a certain way to each other, but I have some thoughts as to why Jon is different and their relationship might not look like a traditional MLM story.

I feel that Jon's affections for Martin are absolutely there and growing over time, but with him being acespec, possibly autistic (the "I feel...sad" moment screams alexithymia to me. He doesn't fully understand his internal feelings until they're too big to ignore), and trying very hard to not get murdered for several seasons, I think it's perfectly reasonable his feelings for Martin would take time to develop.

We do see him softening to Martin over time. We see him thinking about Martin unprompted when he's alone. We see him going from "this man is going to ruin this delicate facade I've put up to seem professional, and I want him gone immediately." to "Oh, you're actually capable. So capable you might be trying to kill me." To "I don't want him to get involved or he might get hurt. I need to keep my distance so he's safe." To "I'm going to make myself tea out of nowhere because the guy who usually made it for me all the time isn't here and now it's part of my routine and I want to keep that part of him around while I'm hiding out for murder."

But once he identifies his own feelings, he overcorrects right into hopeless romantic. He's pining hard all S4, because he finally realized himself that he's in love and it's at the worst possible time. It is abrupt. Dude only just figured it out and he's throwing his whole ass into this.

I think even without the autistic headcanon, the acespec nature of how he views relationships and his whole "I feel...sad" moment indicates clearly that he was just oblivious to his own feelings for a very long time.

I know it feels sudden, but some of us are oblivious, okay? I was friends with a girl for 2 years before my brain flipped the switch and Jon's reaction felt so familiar, and I love it. I just hardly ever get to see "me" in media, and it's a bummer when people say it feels unrealistic. It's not, it's just not the norm.

He often has to shoo you away mid-conversation to keep you from being conned, hit on, or preyed upon. Make him stand tall and put on his intimidating stare, towering behind you as your guard.
